Flyers first Day in FA a big one!

Well lets take a look at what the Flyers have done the minute free agency opened up.

Prior to that we know they re-signed Micheal Leighton to a 2 year deal worth 3.1 million 1.5 million this year and 1.6 million next year. I guess the Flyers really believe in any good defense can beat a good offense. Which is true and which is what the BlackHawks proved this year. But regardless lets not sell Leighton short here. He did have the best GAA during the Playoffs this year and theres a lot of good company in there. Hopefully though the Flyers still have something planned up their sleeve.

Today this is what they did so far.

Re-sign Bradon Coburn to a 2 year deal worth 6.4 million. 3.2 this year and 3.2 next year. Nice to get him locked up as he started to show this year that he is turning into a solid defensive player.

Acquire Andrej Meszaros from the Lightning for a 2012 2nd round pick. Now this deal is puzzling for me and I’m sure for you all. And heres why, you would of went out in FA and got someone else and there was a lot of others that we could name. Who knows maybe the flyers have something brewing that we all dont know about sure would be nice, like I said before I believe they have to have something up their sleeve. Then again if you look at this kids numbers when he was in Ott he was pretty darn good went to a sub par Tampa Bay team and didnt do so well. The thing I dont like about this is the price tag it comes with. 4 years remaining on his contract 4 mill, 4 mill, 4.75 mill, 5.5 mill. I know ouch is right, think of what or who we could of got for that. Oh well heres to hoping this kid evolves into whatever Homer thinks he will evolve into.

Sign Sean O’Donnell to a 1 year contract. 1 year 1 million is the worth of it. Great sign here, I love it. I really feel he is brought in to help “GROOM” Carle, Bartulis, Meszaros, and Coburn who are all young (from left to right – 25, 23, 24, 25). I dont think that Timo and Pronger are the “teaching type”. Besides having this guy on our 3rd line is AMAZING. If you look at the proposal of how our defense will look on paper it is starting to look like the best defense in the league, if not a top 3 for sure. All of this is assuming that Meszaros pans out.

Defensive Line:

1 – Pronger / Carle or Pronger / Meszaros – I think they will pair Prongs with Meszaros to be honest.
2 – Timonen / Coburn – I think this like will stay the same
3 – O’Donnell / Carle or O’Donnell / Meszaros – I believe it will be O’D and Carle

Sign Jody Shelley to a 3 year contract worth 1.1 million a year totaling in at 3.3 million. I do not really understand this signing. My guess would be that the Flyers are doing this to replace Asham but regardless they must see something in Shelley that I do not. The only person that Shelley can score goals against is the Flyers lol, I guess that was worth 1.1 million to Homer? I still do not get this signing, we have to be doing something big here soon. No way thats how we filled our RW need.

As we stand right now our Cap space 0.578 – OUCH. I dont know why but I have a feeling Hartnell is leaving us.
