Flyers have reportedly agreed to a deal that will bring Sergei Bobrovsky, a 21-year-old highly touted Russian goalie prospect, to the Flyers fall Training Camp.
This is according to Euro Flyers on Twitter.
No deal has been made public, but again, there appears to be an agreement in place between the two sides.
Bobrovsky is considered a hybrid goalie who has good size at 6-2 190 pounds, and he is very quick laterally.
There have been rumbles over the past few weeks and days that the Flyers and Red Wings were pursuing Bobrovsky heavily, but it appears the Flyers have won the sweepstakes.
So what does this all mean heading forward?
Well, what it means is the Flyers finally seem to be taking young goalie talent seriously. Bobrovsky will likely start next season in the AHL, and the Flyers other top goalie prospect, Joacim Eriksson, will be able to graduate to the Swedish Elite League without being rushed to North America.
Also if everything goes according to plan, and both prospects develop into NHL starting caliber goaltenders the Flyers have a huge trade piece in their system – similar to what Buffalo has right now with Ryan Miller and their top prospect Jhonas Enroth.
But realistically, both goaltenders developing to their full potential, or something close to full potential is a big IF considering the Flyers goalie development track record over the past 20 years. The Flyers just need to hope one blossoms so they have someone to build around for the next 10-15 years.
