Cairo sent down?

According to David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News, the Phillies designated infielder Miguel Cairo for assignment to make room for tomorrow’s starter, Andrew Carpenter. Cairo, 35, had two hits in 16 plate appearances for the Phils this year. They’d signed him to a minor league deal on February 15th. -Dave Murphy

Andrew Carpenter has been recalled. He will start Saturday’s nightcap thanks to the unavailability of J.A. Happ, who pitched two innings of scoreless relief while picking up his second win of the season. It’s unfortunate for him. He hasn’t been able to buy a big league start over much of the last year. But he pitched well, and his time will come. As for Carpenter, the Phillies had planned on calling him up regardless of tonight’s result, because they felt they needed him for the bullpen for the doubleheader. Kyle Kendrick was available, but Manuel said the fact that Kendrick had never pitched out of the bullpen was one reason Carpenter was the choice. Left unsaid was that the Phillies want Kendrick to focus on revamping his game. And a call-up, however brief, could impact that. Carpenter will make his first big league start. It’s a spot start that almost certainly will not result in another. But it will be fun to watch him pitch and see what he brings. He was 1-0 with a 4.72 ERA in six starts at Lehigh Valley. He turns 25 on Sunday. -philly.com

This is good news, Cairo was not doing well at all and I don’t know why we were keeping him on the team. With us pretty much using everyone from our bullpen last night it makes sense that we bring this kid up. I guess Happ isn’t starting after all. Poor Happ I hope he get’s another shot to get in that rotation
